So I think we are going to do it. We have talked about it for a long time, but I think the time has finally come to just bite the bullet and do it. I think we are going to homeschool next year. I was homeschooled and I am just terribly excited about it even though I know it is going to be a huge change for all of us.
The boys attend a private Christian school and all three excel, so it is not about environmental or educational concerns, but just because we really like having our children at home with us. We teach all of our children preschool at home. But I think next year we will teach everyone! We are considering into enrolling them in the Abeka accademy dvd program.
I mentioned that the boys do well in school. They all make good grades without a lot of effort. Homework is a very rare thing around here! Freeland especially gets bored at school because he completes his assignments so quickly. He spends about half of most days doing "busy work" or reading. He is our son who loves being outdoors and I think he would really thrive being able to finish his work and be free to run instead of sitting in a desk until school is over.
Casper is in first grade this year and so far his average grades are all 99 or 100. He can get 70+ addition and subtraction (mixed) flashcards in a minute. They have these lists of words that they are supposed to be able to read 40 per minute. He gets 90+ words per minute without studying! Teaching him should be a joy!
Douglas is in 7th grade and breezes right through as well. He is very motivated and diligent. He does not finish assignments as quickly as Freeland, but he has enough spare time that he also gets bored.
All that to say that we think it is a good fit for our family and to give you an idea where our boys are school wise. So, all you homeschooling parents out there, we are open to suggestions. What works for you? what doesn't?

It truly takes a few years to get a good routine down and, honestly, the first year is all adjustment anyway.
ReplyDeleteWe have such a mix of students. I have one child who is extremely intelligent but his anxiety/attachment issues give him such a challenge that it gets in the way of his success. He's only 7 and come light years in the 2.5 yrs he's been here. I have one that doesn't have the self-confidence she needs to really succeed but I am happy to say this has been her best year yet and she's getting more scholastic confidence as the years progress.
I love homeschooling because we can tailor fit their education depending on their individual needs. And with children that have been adopted can have such a diverse need (attachment, anxiety, post-trauma, confidence issues, etc).
We home school and use the A Beka DVD curriculum. I absolutely love it! I am now only teaching our four year old because our other four children have graduated.
ReplyDeleteOur four year old is in the K4 DVD program. She is reading! There are not enough good things to say about the curriculum.
I will say that we have done both with Abeka....DVD and then only used their books. I highly recommend the DVD program. The teachers are outstanding!
You just simply can't go wrong having your children near you and enrolled in such a program as A Beka.
My daughter has homeschooled her four children from the beginning (ages 6 to 13) and recently started using "loop scheduling," which she wishes she had discovered much earlier. She explains it here:
